Tips for Driving In Switzerland

Minimum driving age
The minimum driving age using is 18.
Seatbelt requirements
Passengers must wear front and rear seatbelts where fitted.
Children passengers
Children under 7 are not allowed in the front and they must use a proper safety belt or system. Children between the ages of 7 and 12 must use appropriate booster seats or safety restraints.
Drink driving limits
Limits are 50mg/100ml.
Speed limits
• Urban: 50 kph (31 mph)
• Open road: 80-100 kph (50-62 mph)
• Motorway: 120 kph (75 mph)
Lights
Dipped headlights are compulsory at all times.
Fuel
Many fuel stations do not accept major cards like Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
Tolls
Most motorways involve payment for a 'vignette' even if you only use them once or twice (it is difficult to avoid them so advisable to buy one). Annual motorway tax is imposed on residents. A vehicle sticker (vignette) must be displayed or you could be fined.
Parking
You cannot park where signs show the words 'Stationierungsverbot' or 'Interdiction de stationner'. Some towns have restricted parking in 'blue zones' where you cannot park between 8am and 7pm on weekdays, but a permit can be bought. Braunwald, Murren, Rigi, Wengen and Zermatt cannot be reached by private vehicle, only public transport.
You are allowed to park in white zones unless there is a sign that states it is only for customers "nur fr Kunden".
Fines
On the spot fines occur in Switzerland. Ensure an official receipt is issued by the officer collecting the fine.
Mobile phones
It is illegal to use a phone whilst driving.

Other useful information
Make sure you are fully prepared for winter conditions as the snow can making driving difficult. Ensure you carry snow chains and have winter tyres fitted.
