International Driving Permits (IDP)
The 1968
Vienna Convention on Road Traffic regulates driving licenses. Among others, it states:
Any domestic driver's license drawn up in their national language or in one of their national languages, or, if not drawn up in such a language, accompanied by a certified translation.
International Driving Permits are honored in more than 150 countries. They function as an official translation into ten foreign languages of a state's driver license. These licenses are not intended to replace valid state driver licenses; they should only be used as a supplement to a valid license.
An authentic International Driving Permit enables a person with a valid driver license to drive in foreign countries that have signed the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
The International Driving Permit is a simple booklet that translates a consumer’s government-issued driver license into different languages. It is not a substitute for a valid, government-issued license, and cannot be used in place of a suspended or revoked license or as a government-issued identification card.
